The Zahirović family consists of thirteen members who live in Savica-Šanci, a neighborhood in Zagreb. There are eleven children; the youngest one is 11 months old and the oldest is 20 years old, and they all live in a small tin shack with no water or electricity, something that is shocking for the capital of Croatia. The father collects secondary raw materials, and the mother raises children. You can only imagine what it means having to bring food on the table every single day for thirteen hungry mouths. It is a challenge even for more affluent families, but for the Zahirović family it is a daily struggle for survival.
A few weeks ago the youngest child, only a few days old, was bitten by a rat. Luckily, it suffered only mild injuries. Just the fact that a rat managed to bite an infant shows the gravity of their situation. The shack is completely surrounded by trash and litter, which facilitates spreading diseases. The children are excellent students; they are caring and sweet, but sadly have no adequate living conditions and cannot properly integrate into their environment.
Since they have to face prejudice for their Romani origin and the poverty that struck them, the children cannot learn and advance in the society. It is sad that this should happen in Croatia, a country that presents itself to the world as the land of „knowledge and equality“.
Blue Angel Association fights to improve the quality of living in communities regardless of race, religious beliefs or cultural differences; because of that, the Association is determined to help this family, putting the welfare of the children first.
The family has shown us a 53 square meter house in Ferenčica, which would be ideal for them since the children wouldn't have to change their environment. We believe that a warm home is a safe haven where every child should grow up, so that they could become independent and capable of living on their own. Having that in mind, we started a relief drive „Give the Zahirović family a warm home“. Every kuna and every donation means the world to them.
The cost of one brick is around 4 kuna. If you buy a brick for each child, that is 44 kuna. With that symbolic donation you have already done so much, because it will help these children to make their dream come true: to have a place they could call home and which they could look forward to every single day. Try to envision yourself and the ones you love in a situation where you are forced to freeze, surrounded with filth, knowing there is no way out. Be the one who will turn the situation around for these children - donate a symbolic amount of money or participate in the events that the Association will organize, knowing that precisely your donation will help bring a smile to the faces of these children.
