Mattresses and blankets for Ugandan children

Blue Angel association has initiated its projects in one of the poorest parts of Uganda, in the town of Bugembe. We will do humanitarian work in the larger social community of that impoverished settlement where people live in slums, as well as in the Bugembe Blue Primary School, where volunteers are going to work. Our intention is to remodel the school because it has no windows, doors or floors, and the kitchen is out in the open. Meals for children are being prepared on small cookers fuelled by wood and everybody knows what will be cooked (because it is always the same) - posho (maize flour cooked with water). We visited the homes of the poorest children, those without parents, and we are collecting donations to provide food and better living conditions for them so they could go to school and have a mattress to sleep on, instead of sleeping on the floor, a blanket to cover themselves, a mosquito net and some shoes. These children are hungry; many of them have not eaten in days and they cannot afford to pay the school fee. Those who have to live with their distant relatives have to help around from an early age and they have to have some kind of job in order to survive.

Every day before going out we put on our clothes and shoes. Can you imagine what it is like to walk barefoot in the heat? For about 300 million children in the world that is the only option. A single pair of shoes changes a child's life and childhood for the better. We would like to let people know how little it takes to make a child happy and to make his or her childhood better.

Every child deserves an equal opportunity for a life spent with family and filled with love, laughter and joy. To African children a mattress, a blanket, a daily meal, a notebook, a pencil, a mosquito net or some medication mean a lot. To them all of that is just an unfulfilled dream and it seems almost as impossible as reaching the top of a mountain, but your help makes it possible. Feel the joy of having helped to bring joy to a child in Uganda with little money. Even the smallest sum of money is substantial to those who have nothing. In Africa, a little money is a lot.

We need each other, we need to love and to be loved, to talk and to listen, to pray for each other, to encourage and support each other, to hug and to cry in the toughest moments, to help others in their poverty. All of that contributes to our health and happiness and it is important for our spiritual and emotional growth.

In that same way, every impoverished child, no matter in which part of the world he or she lives, deserves change and a better life.
