A newspaper article about Zahirović family, prompted me toward the end of last year to try and help that large family with 11 children through an ongoing Blue Angel Association project, set up to help children from large families. We have just embarked upon our mission but we try to reach people and organization that sympathise with the poor, in order to raise funds and help the needy. Our Association`s goals are to work on improvement of quality of living in the community. Mirsada (36) and Rašid (42) Zahirovic live in Zagreb`s gypsy`s neighborhood Savica-Šanci, in conditions that are hard to imagine for us who live in the city of Zagreb. That is strange because they live in that same town since 1991.
The one that has never set foot in that part of town can`t even imagine those conditions of living. All around there is garbage, rats, mice, cats and all kinds of diseases. Zahirovic family lives in the middle of all that in a little shack made out of sheet metal and bricks, the rain pours through the holes into the room where there is, thank God, a wood-burning stove. Their four older children are excellent students in primary school where they are provided with day care because they dont have any place to learn or do their homework at home-they dont have any table or chair, just two old sofas that are made into beds at night, so that every one of them could find some place to sleep over the night. Next autumn familys sixth child will start school. Monday is the big bathing day in the family- water is warmed on the stove and children bath in a washbasin. They don`t have any running water in house so they are going for it to the nearest hydrant which is in the middle of mud and garbage piles. Rašid goes everyday around noon to the public diner to get food for the whole family. In the middle of all that poverty in their home there isn`t a lack of love, warmth and fellowship and that is exactly why they deserve help from all of us, the children deserve better conditions for their childhood and education.
We have found a small house of 53 m2 in Ferenščica, a neighborhood that would be the best for them because the schoolchildren wouldn`t have to change the school where they have been accepted very fast and well. We are also considering other options of either buying a house or building house.
This is the family that really needs your help, so please, all kind-hearted people (legal entities as well) to help us in our activity ˝Help to family Zahirović˝. Every Kuna (HRK), every donation into our account for them, means a lot for collecting enough money and for buying enough of bricks for the house. One brick costs around 4 HRK ( approximately 0.7$), so if you pay one brick for every child you donate 44 HRK.
